Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way is approximately 109 miles / 176 Kilometres of ever changing landscapes and scenery.

An invigorating walk on any part of the route is the ultimate stress beater.

The route of the Cleveland Way follows a horseshoe line of great variety around much of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Starting from the attractive, historic market town of Helmsley, The route heads across the inspirational, and sometimes vibrant heather Moorland of the North York Moors, before reaching the coast at Saltburn by the Sea. From here it’s a fantastic visual feast along the dramatic North Yorkshire coastline to Filey, passing old fishing villages and lively coastal towns.

Here at Somerset House Farm we are able to arrange to transport walkers, by prior arrangement, from the walk locally  for overnight accomodation and then back to the point of collection the following morning. Please ask for Ashley for more details.

Best Time of Year: The Cleveland Way is open all year round, so there is not really a best time. However If you want to see the delightful full bloom of the heather Mooreland then this take place in late August and September.

Recommended Route & More on the Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way walk was officially opened in 1969 the second National Trail in England and Wales.and is one of the most varied and interesting footpaths in this country. It is just over 100 miles long and goes from Helmsley in the west to Filey in the east. However the walk is not as simple as this; the distance from Helmsley to Filey by road is just over 30 miles by the direct route. The Cleveland Way follows a much more varied route following 3 sides of the moors and a the coastline before it arrives at Filey.

Below is a guide onto to which route you might take and which towns and villagers you may choose to stop in. The Cleveland Way is very well signposted for most of its length but I recommend that you take with an OS map just in-case.

Although 9 or 10 days is the suggested time for the walk there is so much beautiful scenery, history and the hostelries the walk is well worth taking your time over.
